January Mountain Update: Safety Awareness Month and Ongoing Operations

January is National Ski Areas Association Safety Awareness Month. Throughout the month, we will be sharing reminders across the mountain focused on skier responsibility, lift safety, and awareness on the slopes.

Lift loading is part of every ski day, and understanding how it works helps keep things moving smoothly, especially during busy times and when skiing or riding with children. Please listen closely to the lift operator’s instructions and be ready to load when directed. Taking a moment before the load line to get organized helps keep lifts moving smoothly.

When loading with kids, we encourage families to stay together as they approach the chair and assist children into the seat. Make sure everyone is seated all the way back before lowering the safety bar, if available. If you or someone in your group is unsure about loading, our lift teams are available to help. Guests can also review this short video for a quick overview before heading up the mountain.

Thanks to ongoing snowmaking efforts and help from recent snowfall, we have been able to get nearly all lifts online and open more than 50 percent of the mountain’s terrain, with additional terrain continuing to progress toward opening as conditions allow. Our snowmaking, grooming, and patrol teams are working daily to build coverage, improve surface conditions, and safely prepare more runs.

Food and beverage locations are open across the resort throughout the day. We are hosting a breakfast buffet at Hoody’s every morning this season from 7:30-9:30am, with tickets available at the door. Dante’s is a convenient stop between laps, with hot food and new menus available, including old favorites like a basket of fries. Paradise and Purgy’s are open for dinner after a day on the slopes, with Purgy’s featuring new creative specials weekly. This week you can look forward to trying a cantina inspired burger, that features a taco seasoned beef patty, cotija cheese, avocado spread, a spicy jalapeno pico de gallo, and finished with a lime crema.

Snowy days often mean heavier traffic heading up the mountain to Purgatory. We encourage guests to carpool when possible or take advantage of our shuttle service from Durango. On designated carpool days, including weekends, holidays, and larger snow events, our main lot is reserved for vehicles with four or more guests, allowing those groups to park closer to the base area. The City of Durango also offers a local rideshare and carpool program called Way to Go Durango to help coordinate shared rides.

We appreciate everyone doing their part by staying in control, following posted signage, and respecting closures and slow zones. Please continue to check the daily mountain report for the most current lift, trail, and operations updates.

Thank you for being part of the Purgatory community. We look forward to seeing you on the mountain.
