Mountain Update: Snowmaking, Weather and Opening Plans

Fresh dusting of snow starts to cover the needles mountain range on November 21st
Snow starts to blanket the slopes at Purgatory with a view from Molas Pass

Snowmaking and recent natural snowfall have both helped move us toward the start of the season, but warm temperatures and high humidity continue to negatively impact our efforts.  A series of storms has brought new snow across the mountain, with some upper-mountain areas seeing up to 12 inches of wet, heavy accumulation and lower totals toward the base. Snowmaking windows have been very short and inconsistent due to warmer temperatures and high humidity levels which reached as high as 96 percent overnight on Friday and Saturday which forced crews to shut down around midnight.

We will continue to make snow as temperatures allow and will open the mountain as soon as we are able to. Weather this upcoming week is highly dynamic, and we will adjust operations night-to-night based on temperature, humidity, and available snowmaking windows. For updates on progress, please visit our Snow & Weather page and this blog.

Current Operations

Our teams will continue taking advantage of every snowmaking window, and we plan to open as soon as conditions allow. Forecasted nightly temperatures are expected to drop in the coming days, which may improve our operational windows. We will share updates as conditions evolve.

Until we have a confirmed opening date, online sales for products through Friday will be temporarily unavailable. Rentals, lessons and other dated products are also paused through Friday. Once we can confirm our opening day, we will reactivate all online sales, which we hope will be sooner rather than later.

Power Pass Options

Several sister resorts are already open for the season, including:

  • Brian Head, which recently became the first resort to open in Utah this year.
  • Arizona Snowbowl, is open with over 60% of terrain and 56 inches of natural snowfall.
  • Lee Canyon, has 28/29 trails open with 30 inches of natural snow.
Our sister resort Arizona Snowbowl has opened with incredible conditions, 57" so far this season and counting.

Across all Power Pass Resorts, we share the purpose of giving people the freedom to ski.  Their early openings reflect this commitment to get lifts turning and open as early as possible. Power Pass holders looking to ski now are encouraged to visit any of our open sister resorts within the Power Pass network while we work toward Purgatory’s opening day.

We will update this blog frequently as conditions change. Our focus is to stay transparent and get the mountain open as soon as conditions allow.

Dave Rathbun
