The Mountain Marmot Trail Race is NOT for the Weak.

The race route features 12.1 miles of scenic trails with over 2,000ft of climb. This years athletes crushed it in as little as 1:37:39. We aren’t entirely sure how they did it.

Sponsored by Animas Surgical Hospital, and presented by Durango Running company, the Mountain Marmot is definitely at the top of our list for Durango Races. It always ends up falling during the first weekend of cooler temps when the leaves start changing. Which is a nice reward when you’ve been training all summer in the Southwest heat.

We had over 130 participants this year, and saw plenty of familiar faces. Purg is always stoked to see our locals cross that finish line after watching them practice all season. We are especially proud of our Lift Operator Jared Wolf, who you’ve all probably seen running around Durango (or at the Boston Marathon if you were watching closely). He ran this race for the first time last year, placing 3rd in his age group. But that wasn’t good enough for him. This year he dialed in, and ended up snagging the 2nd overall spot, only 10 seconds behind winner Ryan Haebe. Knowing Jared, this just means he’ll train even harder to finally snag the coveted first place Marmot next year.

We aren’t entirely sure how everyone kept smiles on their faces for this race. The cool fall weather had to have helped, but even then. 2000ft of climb in the first 6 miles? AND YOU HAVE TO RUN BACK DOWN? That’s an impressive feat from anyone. Big thank you to all of the participants, as well as all of the bacon and Oreo serving volunteers.

These are some INSANE times, especially for racers coming from sea level?!? Not sure about you guys, but we’ve never seen a marmot move that fast, and we see a lot of marmots.
